Full Circle debuts new upcycled cosmetic ingredient from gin distillery leftovers [Press Release]

On a mission to prove the cosmetic industry can thrive by upcycling, sustainable beauty pioneers Full Circle have launched a new, potent plant-based active ingredient for beauty and personal care applications made from gin distillery leftovers. The aptly named Gin TONIQ® is the first launch in a planned series of upcycled water-soluble actives, forming a ‘TONIQ®’ range to complement the existing line-up of NECTA® oil-soluble actives and CRUSH™ upcycled scrubs & powders.

Full Circle have teamed up with Adnams, a 149-year-old pioneering UK-based brewer and distiller who are ‘zero to landfill’ and have been dedicated to all things sustainable for decades. Full Circle are transforming surplus locally grown grain ferment – a by-product of Adnams’ famous Copper House Gin – into an innovative and sustainable skincare ingredient for long-lasting hydration and moisturisation. For every bottle of gin produced, Full Circle can upcycle 4 litres of gin distillery leftovers.

Voted the World’s Best Gin, Adnams’ Copper House Dry Gin is made from the finest malted barley grown in the East of England, which is then germinated, malted, fermented and copper stilled. This process results in some leftover grain ferment which is free of alcohol; Full Circle captures it fresh, straight from distillation. As part of the manufacturing process, Full Circle incorporates sustainably sourced glycerine which eliminates the need for any preservative.

Backed by in-vivo studies, the combination of the grain and glycerine has been proven to have a synergistic effect on the skin. Gin TONIQ® has been shown to deliver three times more moisture than glycerine alone and delivers up to 8 hours of hydration. Further studies revealed that Gin TONIQ® reduces inflammatory marker IL-8, making it ideal for soothing and calming skincare products, including products formulated for maskne concerns.

This exclusive partnership means that the incredible properties of the gin leftovers can be captured without the need for any new materials, and helps to grow the upcycled beauty economy in line with Full Circle’s primary mission.

“Gin TONIQ® proves that there is so much value in what many would consider to be a waste product. As with the rest of our portfolio, this new launch supports our mission to help beauty and personal care brands transition towards a circular economy without compromising product quality or performance.

“We’re absolutely thrilled to be partnering with Adnams who are also committed to diverting waste from landfill. It’s partnerships like this that help make what we do possible.” – Harry McIlwraith, General Manager, Full Circle.

“At Adnams, for decades we have always looked to minimise our impact on our environment, repurposing is a great way to highlight the importance of thinking differently about waste.” - John McCarthy, Head Distiller, Adnams.

Full Circle’s Gin TONIQ® arrives on the market at a time when global interest in gin is booming and the UK is at the epicentre. Standards and creativity are higher than ever, and a lot has changed since Adnams were the first UK brewery to install a distillery just over 10 years ago. According to Kantar data, gin is the most consumed spirit in the UK, and it exports more gin than any other nation.

Gin TONIQ® is natural, vegan, Ecocert approved, China compliant and can be used within a wide variety of face and body care applications including daily care products.

To further reduce waste in the supply chain, Full Circle’s no-MOQ policy means formulators can purchase as little or as much as they need.

Gin TONIQ® is available to purchase from The Full Circle Shop (https://shop.upcycledbeauty.com/), or from Full Circle’s distribution network, as of 8th March 2021.
